Tell us about Orah?
The Orah Fund was started several years ago with the aim of building a new revenue stream for our community – a revenue stream that is not based upon individual donations.
The concept is simple. Almost everyone in our community invests some of their money with fund managers, so we decided to build a funds management business that is effectively 100% owned by the community and where all of the fees that are made by this business are donated to Jewish charities.
Most importantly, the Orah fund has generated excellent investment returns. The reason for this is that Orah is managed by some of Australia’s best fund managers.
Incredibly Orah operates with zero expenses as all these fund managers as well as other service providers provide their services free of charge. This enables Orah to donate 100% of its fees earned to charity.
The people who invest with the Orah Fund benefit personally by receiving these excellent investment returns - whilst at the same time help generate lots of revenue for the community. It really is a win-win.
Over the last several years, Orah has generated over $3.5m of revenues for over 30 Jewish charities in Australia and Israel including JCAS.
Orah has been thrilled to support JCAS, as it helps build a stronger and more inclusive environment in the Jewish Day Schools. School fees are expensive and the additional cost of funding the aides necessary to support the children living with disabilities would make it more difficult for both the families and the schools.
By funding JCAS we have helped make a difference to many families whose children attend any one of the many Jewish day schools in Melbourne. Not only do those children benefit but the entire school Community is richer for their inclusion.
2. Why did you choose JCAS as a recipient of funding?
